Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. A refrigerant is a liquid that is stored in your AC coils, which help cool and dehumidify the indoor air. Without refrigerants, air conditioning would not be possible. For a long time, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, R-22 will no longer be legal to produce as a result of its damage to the environment. Introducing R-410A To decrease environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now designed to work with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and is free of chlorine, making it ozone-friendly. You can feel good about using this refrigerant in Saint Petersburg because it’ll help make your AC operate efficiently, reliably and quietly, and provide the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was made anytime before 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You may want to look into upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is totally phased out. The old refrigerant will become scarce in the next few years, costing you more to run your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Hale's Air Conditioning Services Inc work with R-410A, so you know we have an AC or heat pump that better meets your needs. You should also avoid”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
